Drink Water or Die
We all know that eating whole, healthy foods is vital to our health, but we often overlook another, even more critical component of our wellbeing: hydration. Water is absolutely crucial for the body, and I intend to drive this point home over and over again.
In the grand scheme of things, water is the single most important nutrient your body needs. Think of it this way: you’re made up of water. Your brain is 95 percent water, your blood is 82 percent and your lungs are 90 percent. Water helps fuel these organs and it helps balance your body’s systems, muscles, and functions.
In fact, water is so important that just a minor 2 percent drop in your body’s water levels can cause your brain to shrink, leading to muscular problems, decreased focus, and lower cognitive function.
In the words of nutrition expert Tosca Reno: “A common nutritional deficiency in North America is not drinking enough water, mainly because, as much as we seem to carry our water bottle around with us, we are carrying diuretic beverages, juices, sodas and more in the other hand. Being dehydrated brings on feelings of anxiety that can be washed away just by drinking water. Keeping yourself properly hydrated bathes your organs in water and electrolytes, and helps free stress.”
If you’re trying to lose weight, get fit, or just be healthier, make sure you’re not just focusing on the food you consume, but also the amount of water, too. Your body needs to stay hydrated in order to function properly and to deliver the weight loss and fitness results you’re looking for.
In the long run, getting the proper amount of water (a gallon a day is wise), can give you a great many benefits, including:
